WHAT WE DO

Steri-Animal is dedicated to sterilize feral and abandoned companion cats in order to reduce the population of stray cats in and around Montreal, in a humane and effective way.

We go to feral cat colonies to trap-neuter and release those cats that are 12 weeks and older. Younger kittens are vaccinated and sent to foster homes for taming before adoption.

The mother cat and the 4 month old male kitten in this picture  were trapped in St-Laurent and sterilized. The photo was taken a few seconds before they were released at the exact spot where they were trapped two days before.

Sterilization of abandoned animals is Steri-Animal's main focus but we also have several wonderful cats and kittens for adoption.

When homeless but not feral cats are trapped they are sometimes placed if a foster home is available to take care of them until they are adopted. We also try to find homes for other abandoned companion animals but given the lack of foster homes, surrendered pets must stay with their former owners until they get adopted or until a foster home is found.

Steri-Animal prefers to sterilize most of the cats from a small number of colonies so that the population from these colonies is stabilized, rather than sterilizing a few cats all over the Montreal area, which would not have much impact. It is scientifically proven that at least 70% of a stray cat population must be sterilized for it to stop growing and for us this is the passing grade.
